In Joy, Joann --- ## Tips for Creating the Perfect Lounge URL: https://ceremoniesdevie.com/tips-for-creating-the-perfect-lounge/   One of the first questions I ask my clients during the design process is, “What kind of environment are you looking to create for your guests?” and the response I hear a lot includes: unpretentious, relaxed, social and welcoming. A great way to create this atmosphere is to incorporate lounge areas into their designs. It can be as simple as having two sofas facing each other or as posh as having multiple tufted banquettes with custom sewn pillows, several ottomans and accent pieces and all surrounding an over the top floral arrangement that stands 4′ high. The concept works within most budget ranges because you could spend anywhere from $300 to $3,000. Here are some of my ideas for creating lounges: Staging is Key –  There are many ways to arrange the furniture for your lounge and it really depends on the number of pieces you have. Make sure it is easily accessible from all angles and faces the crowd. To get some ideas on furniture arrangements, take a look at the pictures below. There is a wide variety for you to consider. Provide Seating for 6+ – Make sure your lounge area can accommodate at least 6 people so that it keeps a warm, social and inviting space. Tent it – a small tent will do…20×20 or so. A clear top will allow guests can enjoy the twinkling stars. A white tent will allow you to have fun with draping and trims! Lighting – Lighting the lounge is a fun way to set the ambiance and glam up the space. Have fun with it! Hang a single statement making chandelier over the entire space or multiple small chandeliers as a runner over the long coffee table. Not a fan of chandeliers? Use lamps! Dress up a side table or other accent table with a beautiful lamp or two and you’re set! On a budget? Go with candles…lots of them. Nothing is more romantic than the flicker of a candle after all. Keep it Clean – Don’t crowd the space with too much. Get Eclectic – Keep your furniture pieces simple, but eclectic. For example, pair a tufted white couch with either a chaise lounge, multiple ottomans, two colorful armchairs chairs, a wooden bench or a combination of these pieces. Bold Accents – From pillows and flowers to umbrellas and light fixtures, pull in pops of color around your main pieces. Add a Backdrop – Create a wall behind the lounge by using long strands of crystal beads, pipe and drape in sheer organza fabric or a makeshift gallery wall of eclectic vintage mirrors. Create Multiple Lounges in One – I love this idea! Start with a 4′x4′ linen covered table with a tall floral arrangement as your center. Then place the back side of 4 sofas or banquettes around it. Then build your lounges by adding more pieces to the four sides. Just be sure to keep all four areas uniform in look. Build a “Patio” – I adore this idea too! Setup your lounge to look like a “patio” off of your tent space! Elevate it off the ground and have a set of steps leading to it. Lay down sisal rugs or carpet to cover the flooring and string cafe lights above. Then set your lounge up as you wish! One thing you’ll want to make sure you do it create a barrier around the sides so guests do not fall off as the night goes on. --- ## 6 Keys to Honoring Yourself in Relationships URL: https://ceremoniesdevie.com/6-keys-to-honoring-yourself-in-relationships/ Couples often ask me if  I can tell when some couples will stay together or when others will separate.  Sometimes there are clues. Often it’s how they speak to one another and their willingness to put themselves in their partner’s shoes. This article my Dr. Simon speaks to the heart of compromise in partnerships. It’s the last day of January. Apparently, the real danger’s over: The divorce rate in January spikes as more couples than before decide they want out. In the last month of last year, and in the beginning of this year, whilst I found myself at the center of reassessing what it’s going to take to make my relationship work, and re-evaluating whether or not my partner and I have what it takes – I shared my experiences in my blog – and as a result many people reached out to me letting me know they too were going through a process of reflection, trying to decide if they could ever make it work in their relationship. Unexpected phone calls, emails, and text messages – from people I knew and some people I didn’t know – from all parts of the world were coming in across airwaves but with one common thread: I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know if I know how to do this. But it’s the last day of January. We made it. We all made it. We’re still here. We’re more committed than ever. And we’ve all got a chance. My own personal experience, alongside the experiences that people kindly shared with me, made me reflect deeply about what it takes to really give a relationship the time, space and chance it needs to flourish. I observed that there were five big changes in behavior that I – and everyone I was witnessing in crisis – needed to be reminded to make in order to be really honoring themselves and their relationship. I say reminded because I think somewhere deep inside of us, we all know this stuff. Of course we did, because how else did we all ever fall in love? Love knows all this innately. But when the turbulence comes, our thinking gets shaken. So here it is written out. My blueprint for things I must remember in my relationship for 2013, and for the rest of this life, whatever this life brings. 1. Commit to Being Present It’s common practice to deal with discomfort by wishing it away. Most of us are innately non-confrontational, and when it comes to relationships, for most of us, I’m sure it is easier to think what life could be life away from ‘this’ – than to breathe in and out the aching disappointment of this. present. moment. If we put as much energy into being present as we do into imagining our exit, we may transform whatever chance there is into something so strong that it won’t be shaken. Give up the daydream of what would happen if you left now, or in five years, or when the kids are grown up and in college. Commit to being present. Be Here Now. Be prepared to live every day with the thought that: ‘This is my life. I am here to stay in this life of mine. I am willing to respectfully honor everyone in my life now by being wholly present, by being wholly committed, by being wholly available for the best for all of us to unfold.’   2. Recognize That We Are On A Team Do we really want this partnership? Really? Because if we do, the truth is we’ll have to recognize that we make up only one half of the partnership. We and your Chosen One are a Team. Team Together. And both parties on that Team will have to make the decision that the only kind of success we are going to value is one that is a success for the team. We may still have goals for our self. But we have to re visit our goals so that our individual goals support a wider vision with our partner. We’re only one half of a whole – and as such what we want shouldn’t be in conflict with what the team wants overall because to succeed independently, we will need the co operation and support of the other half to achieve whatever we want to achieve. And to succeed at something that doesn’t support the team, isn’t a success at all. On a team, success, by definition only happens when the team succeeds. There will be times sometimes for both parties to take one – or ten – or maybe stop counting – for the team. For my part, I continually ask myself: ‘What do I want from this partnership? What do I want for this partnership? What do WE want? Who do I have to be, with the running mate I’ve got, for us to get there? ‘   3. Accept Sacrifice – Eliminating the Source of Conflict Altogether We’ll have make sacrifices to keep the Peace. There. I said it. Yes, there are mostly compromises, with their implicit meaning that we both agreed what to do – but beyond that, sometimes there’s something else. Sometimes there’s outright sacrifice. Want to live in NYC at the center of an urban lifestyle? With someone who can’t stand inner cities, bright lights or loud noise? Forget it. It’s over. It’s just not every going to happen. And we may even have to sacrifice the job offer of a lifetime because it won’t work for our other half. Partner wants to live in a beach house a block from the Ocean? Won’t work if the my works is 2 hours inland and we both want a relationship where we see actually see each other every day. Sometimes to keep the peace, that’s what it’s going to take: giving up what we think we want; giving up things we never even got yet, but that we thought one day we’d finally get; giving up things we’ve worked long and hard to get. It’s not always for us to sacrifice. Sometimes it’ll be our partner. But it happens. It happens. This is how I deal with this – the most challenging for me of all elements of togetherness – : Close your eyes. Feel in your body what it’s like for the thing to be gone. Breathe out. Let it go. Stay detached. Move On. Stay Detached. Oh – and Stay Detached. And keep breathing. Don’t stop breathing.   4. Give Up Comparing: Until You Walk A Mile in Another Man’s Moccasins. There’s a story told by the saint Amma. I think it goes something like this : God built a village and reigned in heaven thinking how plentifully he had provided for all. But all the people in the village complained all day and all night. The fishermen complained the seas were unforgiving and their wives complained the fish too scarce. The farming women in the fields complained the sun was too hot, and their husbands did not work enough. The husbands complained that they had no purpose- and yet refused to empower themselves through education or new skills. They all complained to each other that there was not one amongst them who suffered as they themselves did, and they argued that their life was far more miserable than anyone else’s, and were jealous of the apparent ease and happiness every other seemed to enjoy. Eventually God’s rest in heaven was disturbed by the tumultuous noise of all the humans complaining. He went to earth and he said ‘I’ll grant you three wishes to make your complaints stop. What do you want?’ First they wished that all they each be relieved of their life as they knew it, and asked that their lives were taken off them and placed in the center of the village. God granted this, and returned to heaven. But soon, after a time, the humans found that there was no meaning or purpose to living without the direction of the shape of their life. They realised that life came with problems. But now with no lief at all, they complained even more vociferously that they were lost. The sound of this turned into an overwhelming cacophony – and God returned to grant them their second wish. This time they humans wished that they could each just have someone else’s life (even with all its troubles and problems) – so long as their own old life did not come ever back. God granted this too and went back to heaven. But now the humans had to live the real life of someone else, with all its complications and complexities and impossibilities.Their distress at this was uncontrollable and now they screamed in unbearable anguish. God was again disturbed in heaven. So he descended, and asked ‘What now? What is your last wish?’ The humans wished that they should each be allowed to be free at once of someone else’s life, and to live a life – even if it had problems – in which they could find some happiness at least. God agreed. But this time, he took all the lives of each of the villagers, with its unique attendant problems, and placed them in the center of the village and said this: ‘Go now, and take the life you each find gives you the most ease.’ The humans, without question went, silently one by one – and from the center of the village they each took their own life back. They had seen the inside machinations of each other’s worlds, and decided that the life of the other was not at all as they had imagined it – and their own unique life was not indeed so bad after all. *** I realised that I’ve been thinking that everyone else has an easy relationship because I am in a neurotypical female in a relationship with a non-neurotypical man. No one else is having to deal with neurodiversity, I’ve thought. No – but after all those phone calls with friends all over the worlds, same sex couples, married couples, not even engaged couples – I realized, there is no meaning in comparing. It’s an illusion. And as I comforted friends over the last two months I’ve found myself saying it out loud – don’t do it. Don’t compare yourself to your friends, your family, movie stars or characters in novels. None of it’s real because you simply don’t know. What you do know is what you’ve got going on for you. So switch off your phone. Check out of Facebook. Get quiet. Be still. Pay attention to your life story, not someone else’s. Tell yourself to look inwards. Listen to your heart, not to your friends. And remember that the Buddha said: “The way is not in the sky. The way is in the heart.”   5. Identify what you can’t work out together and commit to get help I never knew this one was hard for so many of us. I don’t mind asking for help. But I’ve come to see that it’s not easy for many of us to accept that we need it. But if you’re going to be on a Team Together, we can’t refuse to get help when neither one of the halves knows how to support the other. It doesn’t mean there’s no love left. It doesn’t mean blame. It doesn’t mean it’s almost over. It just means there needs to be some help. That’s all. Don’t make it bigger than it is. Just do it.   6. Know Who You Are: Never Compromise Your Inner Harmony This is not the antithesis of everything above – rather it’s the framework for all of it. Not compromising yourself and being prepared to make sacrifices are two different things. Not compromising yourself is about knowing who you are. Knowing what you value. Knowing what you really deeply want to get out of this single shot at life in this time and space, and knowing what you’re prepared to do or not do in order to achieve the life you want to live. Knowing yourself is knowing about knowing how far you can go – even when it’s beyond your comfort zone – It’s the knowing yourself that counts for everything, and that makes it possible to go through with the sacrifices without resentment or fear. Because, in the end, you find that you can let go easily enough of something that isn’t you to begin with – even if it’s something you’ve learned to get a kick out of. Maybe living in NYC doesn’t matter if it means giving up a place on the Team. Maybe inland is just fine if it means that the whole Team gets to connect for dinner everyday. Knowing yourself is what allows us to discover that we have more patience, more forgiveness, more flexibility, more adaptability and more love to give in circumstances that we thought we could never get through. Knowing the self is what makes yeilding and compromise effortless, what makes sacrifice and forgiving possible: because the Self will tell us when it’s safe to stay and love more, and when the most loving thing one can do is move on. For this, I turn to a question put to so many of us by our beloved teacher, Dr. David Simon: ‘Do you want to be right, or do you want to be happy?’ Knowing who I am helps me answer this with ever surprising results in the most amazing of situations. I am more patient than I ever thought myself capable of being. I am more tolerant than I ever thought imaginable of me. I am more flexible than I ever knew of myself. And still -all the while, I know who I am. And I’ll know if I’m ever not being true to me. Remember that your florist works for you. They should be available, helpful and honest about what she can and cannot do within your budget. 10. Stick to your guns! Don’t allow any wedding vendor to push you into contracting for things you really cannot afford or will be in debt for later. Remember this is only one day and starting your new life stress free is far more important than having that additional item you probably won’t even have time to notice at your ceremony or reception. Typically the most expensive way to wed, a private estate usually comes with a set site fee but allows you to bring in your own food and beverage.  So, what’s the site fee and what does it include?  Most private estates won’t allow the use of the interior of the home.  So what that means is you have to bring everything in.  We mean everything.  From a mobile kitchen to tables and chairs, even trash and restrooms and sometimes a generator for power.  If that site see seemed cost effective, it may not be when you add in all the extras it takes to wed there. How do guests get there?  Can you valet on the street?  If not, chances are you’ll have to rent a nearby parking lot and hire a valet company to take the cars off property or you’ll need to rent shuttles to bus your party to and from the venue.  Added costs and added time in the timeline to consider.  But if this is the case, then have fun with it!  Put a video or slideshow on loop in the buses and give each guest a little something to nosh on displayed at their seat for the short trip. Where do you get ready?  Some homeowners will allow use of the home for the bridal party and couple only.  If so, great!  You’ll likely have a beautiful bedroom to take photos and get ready in.  If not, is there a nearby hotel you and your bridal party (and possibly guests) can stay at and get ready in? And lastly, the curfew.  Most residential homes have a city set curfew for amplified music and you’ll need to shut down the party in time for the neighbors to go to bed.  If staying out late is important to you, ask about the curfew!  And worst case scenario, consider an after party at a local watering hole. We love, love, love weddings at private estates but there are more moving parts to the planning process so the best piece of advice we can give you is to hire a wedding planner!!  Especially when selecting a site like this! Fear not. Arm yourself with some basics and you can enjoy a fearless approach to the wedding dress hunt. As daunting of a task as it might seem, this is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning, so enjoy it! Start with the most important: be realistic. If your figure is less than flattering in a certain style, avoid, avoid, avoid! Think about what compliments your body; this might not necessarily be the dress you had imagined in your childhood dreams, but it can come close. Try on a lot of different styles; be open to things that might not look great on the hanger but could fit beautifully. You never know what you might fall in love with! Take a look at your closet; what is your go-to dress? And along that note, let your sales associate pick for you!  She or he knows what they are doing.  Allow them the freedom to pull a few looks for you and give them a try, even if you would not have selected them yourself.  You might be surprised at what you love! Not quite sure where to even begin? Refer to your venue. Look to your location to lend a hand and influence the kind of gown that will not only look fabulous on you, but also go well with your surroundings. If you were exchanging vows at a Gothic church in December, you wouldn’t shop for something that screams summery and fun, right? Plan ahead. Give yourself plenty of time to avoid the types of disasters that can come with time-sensitive matters. It might seem like all you have to do is walk into a bridal salon, try on a few gowns, fall head over heals and hand over your card. This is typically not the case; there are a lot of factors that are involved in ensuring your dress is perfect for you. Depending on your situation, this includes anything from simple to complex alterations, cleaning or ordering issues. Start shopping nine months before your big day. If you don’t have that much time, a budget for potential rush charges.  Oh, and make an appointment.  Most bridal salons work by appointment only. Work within your budget. How much are you willing to spend on a dress? Some gowns might cost three times what you had in mind, but that doesn’t mean it’s three times better. Spend time looking at your options and become familiar with what is out there. Do some research! Consider also veil, shoe and alteration costs too. Don’t let anyone push you in any one direction. When you go shopping, bring someone with you who knows your personality and your style and is familiar with your wedding details and won’t push their agenda on you.  You certainly don’t want buyer’s remorse! MM: All of the excitement and nerves are fresh just before your wedding and capturing those ‘little moments’ of anticipation, mom’s adoring glances, a best friend’s hug, or even the expression on faces will remind them of exactly how they felt that morning. It’s one of my favorite elements of a wedding day to photograph. BB: Suggestions to ensure these photos are spectacular? MM: If you’re getting ready in a hotel, request a room or suite with great window light. Or if you’re in a home, use a room where you can keep the curtains open. Natural lighting not only is more beautiful for photographs, it helps keep the photographer experience unobtrusive because we don’t have to light the room with our flashes. Space is great to have as well, welcoming your wedding day morning with ease and as little clutter as possible make for beautiful photographs! BB: How does the getting ready time impact the rest of the event? MM: The ‘getting ready’ time of the day sets a tone for the rest of day. For me it’s a great time to capture the little moments of anticipation and excitement and it helps put the couple at ease by allowing me to mesh into the scene unobtrusively so that when the wedding begins they can concentrate more on experiencing their wedding day. BB: When hiring a photographer and planning the schedule, what should couples look out for in packages or pricing to ensure they get these images? MM: Photographers have various reasons for limiting hours in their packages. The most important is to make sure that the hours they’re offering work with the flow you envision for your day. The last thing you want to do is rush through your day. Going into your consultation having a preliminary timeline in mind is helpful on deciding how many hours of coverage you need. If having your wedding day documented from your getting ready moments until your last dance is important at the minimum you should look for 8+ hours. Make sure added hours don’t stretch your budget too thin and find someone who understands the value of your experience as much as the value of their time. All of my packages start at 10 hours of coverage because the last thing I’d want is for my clients to rush through any of their wedding day experiences. BB:  What if you’re camera shy or not very comfortable getting dressed in front of lots of people? Los Angeles Wedding Photography Expert Q&A MM: Finding a photographer you’re comfortable with is key.  If you’re modest and really feel uncomfortable dressing in front of the camera ask your photographer to come into the room when you’re half way dressed. I always speak to my clients about this before their wedding day, ensuring both that I will be framing my shots in only the most flattering ways but also that I am there to provide them with images that they want. If they don’t want photographs showing their bodies then I respect that. Another thing I remind them is that the shots that I do include of them getting ready that might show a curve or two do not end up in their collection and gallery of images. Those are provided separately so that you can decide if and who you want to share them with (they make great boudoir gifts too!!). They’re such a  simple concept, yet can show your personality and easily add to whatever element or themes you’re trying to project from your wedding. A  somewhat newer backdrop that I’ve seen and am rather enamored with is the chalkboard photo wall. It’s something that can be as easy or complex as you desire. Using chalkboard paint you could paint a wall (if venue  allows of course!), a heavy piece of canvas (most affordable option) or  buy plywood from a home improvement store, paint it with chalkboard  paint (which comes in several color options by the way) and add a simple  frame or even one from reclaimed wood. Nail it together, prop it up,  give your guests some chalk and let them go wild!   One of the easiest, most affordable, and fun photo backdrops is…a  sheet. Yes, I know, it sounds too simple to be true, but just searching on ebay or etsy for a colorful vintage sheet can yield all kinds of amazing finds. I especially love this look for outdoor weddings, and look how great it can be even at night! Simple, sweet, affordable,  it’s the best kind of DIY! Just search, click, buy and hang with a  string. The same look can be attained with an anthropology shower curtain (seriously!) or a bolt of your favorite fabric. Now, take the neon 1990′s paint splatter image out of your mind and instead think modern, monochromatic, quirky paint splatter.  This backdrop would be especially fun to make! All you need is an affordable fabric from your local fabric store, muslin would work well and is not expensive. I don’t know about you, but before I entered the wedding world I assumed that white was symbolic of purity; if you were a virgin or, more commonly, if it was your first time getting married, you wore a white dress.  If it was your second (or more) wedding, some form of ivory or beige was the accepted color for you.  Believe it or not, blue is the color that represents purity and virginity; do a Google Image search of the Virgin Mary; you’ll see that every picture has the color blue in it.  Back in medieval Europe and even up until the late fifteenth century, white was seen as a mourning color! That is still the case for some countries and cultures such as Hinduism. So how did the image of the white wedding dress come about?  Brides used to wear an array of colors for their wedding dress (including black and red, two of the more popular colors), and every now and again a white dress was worn by royalty or by a bride from a wealthy family.  Gowns were often made of heavy brocaded fabric and embroidered with white and silver thread.  White was seen as impractical as it soiled easily and thus could only be worn once, so only wealthy families saw brides wearing white.  Back in 1840, Queen Victoria married Price Albert.  She had some exquisite white lace that she adored, and wanted it incorporated into her dress, so she had a silk white dress made for her with a veil made of precious her lace (see below for a picture).  The applique you see on her gown is orange blossoms, thought to bring luck along with their pleasing fragrance.  Many saw Queen Victoria’s choice as a statement, and a new trend was born! In time the churches embraced this trend for religious reasons; when children (both boys and girls) are baptized, they wear christening gowns; small white gowns that resemble wedding gowns.  As young girls grow older, the go through confirmation; the act of pledging their faith and thus becoming a full acting member of the church.  And guess what they wear for these ceremonies?  That’s right, a white dress.  You can see pictures of christening and confirmation dresses below.  A white dress has become the accepted garment worn by women when making religious vows, marriage vows being one of those times. However this is primarily true in Western Culture.  In India, China, Korea and Vietnam, brides wear red on their wedding day; in Japan they wear many dresses of different colors throughout the day. So what does this mean for the modern bride?  It means you can wear any color you want!  In fact these days brides don’t often wear a true white dress; true white doesn’t look good on many skin tones.  Ivory, beige and off-white are much more common, and since they are shades of white guests are often none the wiser. Perhaps you want to go away from the norm, but you aren’t ready to don a blue dress?  Try adding a splash of color and personality with a colored belt or sash to compliment your wedding colors or your bridesmaid dresses.  Pastels are another subtle way to stray from tradition—light pinks, yellows, blues and purples tend to be the most popular, and if it’s the right shade it can almost look like a glimmer of color rather than a full colored gown. Then there are the brides that like to make a statement—you know who you are!  Vera Wang, BHLDN and Oscar de la Renta are just a few designers making gowns with color; sometimes a splash, sometimes full-on black or red!  You can see some of these stunning gowns on   So what color should you wear on your wedding day?  Whatever color you love and looks good with your skin tone and hair color; after all, this is your day to shine, you should do it exactly the way you want to!!! Lauren is the queen of DIY and has been a regular on the Blog for quite some time now. It’s a fantastic idea and one that isn’t too hard to do but will take some time. These  Film Strip Invitations are a great idea and would be a super cute  addition to your wedding, can you imagine your guests faces when they received them! (Photo Source Top & Bottom Left, Bottom Right) I’ll pass the blog over to Lauren……….. So whilst searching all around the Pinterest world I found the most creative and easy invitations! I thought these would be great as invitations! I’m not sure that they would be any cheaper than paper invitations, but they certainly would surprise your guests! Step 1) The first task is to open the film canister. I have to say that I felt bad wasting a whole roll of film but I had film that had been lying around forever not being used. Sadly, with a bottle opener, it was a little more difficult to open the canister. In order to open it, turn the film to the part without the spindle sticking out and find the lip with your can opener. Pry the lid off by working your way around the whole canister. Be careful not to bend the cap too badly, as you will need to put it back on later! Step 2) Next, pop the film and the spindle out of the canister. And detach the film from the spindle. Step 3) Take the film and spread it out as best you can and trace your paper to get a strip the same width as the film. You may want to make your strip of paper longer so you can write more on it. Step 4) Once it’s traced, cut out the strip. Take one end of that strip and cut off the corners to form a point. This will be your pull tab. If you want to write the word “Pull” you can, I thought it added a really cute touch. Now you can start to write your message. Make sure you write it all out first on a piece of paper and practice a few times if you’re going to do fancy handwriting. Make sure you leave about a half inch or so of space to account for the bit of paper that won’t pull all the way out from the canister. Step 5) Because of the way your paper will be pulled out of the canister, everyone will basically be reading your words from right to left. For this reason, it’s important to start with your last words at the very end. Step 6) Once you are finished writing your message (I hope it all fit!), it’s time to roll your message onto the spindle. Step 7) Put a piece of clear tape on the end of your paper strip and tape it to the spindle, then just roll it up! Once it’s all rolled, slide the pointy end through the opening in the canister so that it sticks out a little. Step 8) Next place your spindle back in the empty canister and *attempt* to put the cap back on. This is the most challenging part of this DIY. I think I wrestled with the cap for about 20 minutes before I got it on, and even then I’m not sure that it was securely on. These invites are probably best for small events like an engagement party or bridal shower. A wedding invite just has too many moving parts to it, in my opinion. You can also try doing the writing part on the computer to get more information on the strip of paper. I know I’m not having a bridal shower, but these are definitely the kind of fun invitations I’d love to do! Let me know if you decide to DIY these! Tips to make this easier: Be careful when you are opening the canister not to bend the metal Glue…glue helps Pliers to sort of close the edges tightly around the canister. Today, our crafty girl, Polly Conway, has given these antique icons a modern makeover using acrylic paint and washi tape for a fun, updated twist on the trend. Here’s Polly with all the colorful details. Keys! They’re a classic, symbolic piece of wedding décor. I wanted to create a modern, versatile take on the skeleton key by combining two of my favorite trends: washi tape and neon. These bold keys can adorn favors, hang from floral arrangements, or be used as color-coded escort cards. Read on for this super-simple how-to! Supplies needed: 1. Vintage-style keys (I used these inexpensive replicas meant for scrapbooking!) 2. Acrylic paint in chosen colors 3. Paintbrush 4. Washi tape 5. Scissors 6. Kraft paper tags 7. Baker’s twine 8. Optional: letter/number stamps Step 1: Decide which parts of the keys you’d like to paint. Paint a thin layer on each and let dry for 10-15 minutes. Repeat until the color you want is achieved. One or two layers will create a distressed look, while three or four will give a more uniform color. (Waiting for the paint to dry is by far the hardest part of this project.) Step 2: Wrap a length of washi tape around the body of the key, sticking it together to create a little flag. Tear ends of tape, or use scissors to snip simple designs. Step 3: Almost done!
